Live an unforgettable experience taking one of our Gray Whale watching tours in Magdalena Bay, a place that serves as a refuge and natural shelter, they visit us in their annual cycle that includes January – March for the birth and development of the calves in their first days of life and mating, so it is possible to see specimens of this great species as adults, juveniles and calves.
This full-day activity takes you outside of the bay into the vast open ocean of the Pacific, where we will look for all sorts of marine life to swim with! Although the ocean is big, this small fishing community has eyes all over that make it feel small. The best time of year for these tours is between the months of September- January. We can see anything from whales, sea lions, Mobula rays, sea turtles, super pods of dolphins, marlins, and other pelagic fish hunting bait-balls, or even orcas! The opportunities are endless. No experience is necessary, just need to know how to swim
Everyone should experience this at least once in their lifetime. Intimate encounters with friendly gray whales like nowhere else in the world. Every year from January to April, grey whales make the longest mammalian migration from Alaska to the waters of Magdalena Bay. These 40-ton gentle giants, dwarf our 25-foot pangas as they come up right next to the boat. During your tour, you can see lots of different behaviors including spy-hopping, mating, playful calves, and other social behaviors. If you splash your hand in the water you might even have a whale’s head come right into your hand looking for a rub! Whale-watching here is very regulated-there is no swimming with the whales, and our local fishermen captain shows the utmost respect during our encounters. We offer 3-hour tours, twice per day with lunch on the island in between.
Whether you are a seasoned kayaker or want to learn Stand-Up paddle boarding for the first time, our passionate and knowledgeable guides are here to make sure you have the best experience. We love to kayak through the mangroves at sunset or sunrise to witness the array of life and color. Paddling in the open bay gives us the opportunity to see dolphins, and maybe even whales during the winter season! Not to mention the stunning backdrop of the mountainous islands and year-round great weather. Kayaks and paddleboards of all sizes are available to use anytime during your stay at the base camp with us.
If you don’t feel like venturing off-shore to swim with the big pelagic marine life, we have a plethora of other snorkeling sites around the bay where we can see playful sea lions or bright orange Garibaldi fish swimming amongst flowing green kelp. After a refreshing snorkel with the local marine life, warm up on our beautiful beaches with a picnic of fresh ceviche and lemonade.
We have diving all year round for every level of diver. Dive with the friendliest California Sealions in La Lobera, or an old Japanese WWII Submarine and shipwreck. From nudibranchs to octopuses in mesmerizing kelp gardens, the diving here is unlike anywhere else in the Baja Peninsula. The best part: you won’t see any other divers!
Imagine catching waves off a beautiful remote coast on an uninhabited island in Magdalena Bay with no one around? Our pangas will take you from our base camp on Magdalena Island to the shores of Cabo San Lazaro (40 min ride). Ride to your heart’s content, and the boat is always there waiting with snacks, lunch, and a spot to rest. Your photographers can use the panga to get the perfect shot of you down wave right from the boat. The season for surf is only from March-November and the area has three right hands, rock bottom point breaks. Most of the time the waves are waist to head high- perfect for longboarders and SUPs. However, when the surf report is overhead, you can find perfect waves for short borders. Due to the remote nature of these waves, we recommend an intermediate or advanced level of surfing for this activity.
The fishing in Mag Bay is good all year round, just depends on what you want to catch! We have in-shore mangrove fishing and off-shore, deep-sea pelagic fishing in the Pacific. We have two well-equipped sport fishing boats, as well as multiple pangas (covered or non-covered), depending on where you want to go and what you want to catch. Captain Aron was born and raised in Mag Bay and has been an artisanal and commercial fisherman here for most of his life. He knows this area like the back of his hand and can tell you where the fish will be and when. After a day of fishing, bring in your catch for Chef Raul to prepare for you any way that you desire.
The intersection of four different ecosystems (mangroves, ocean, dunes, and mountains), makes Magdalena Bay the perfect spot for an array of birdlife throughout the year. In fact, BirdLife International Association has called this place an important Area for bird conservation. During your hikes, drives, or bikes around the island, you will see fishing eagles, white ibis, blue herons, hawks, osprey, and maybe even a bald eagle! During your kayaks or paddleboards through the mangrove or in the bay, you can spot cormorants, frigates, pelicans, and many more seafaring bird species!
Sunrise or sunset, there are hikes on every side of the island for any time of day with views of both bays and the pacific. During your hike, you can look for coyotes, birds, and lots of different types of desert plants, cactuses, and biodiverse mangrove ecosystems. During whale season you can spot grey whales inside the bay, and humpbacks migrating south on the Pacific side. There are hikes for every type of adventurer- long hikes, short hikes, steep hikes, and flat hikes.
The locals call this place the world’s 7th wonder and it’s not hard to figure out why. From the base camp, it’s about a 40 min boat ride across the bay, the boat takes you through the winding mangrove waterways. These luscious ocean forests are teeming with life: ospreys, herons, egrets, juvenile fish species, etc. The snaking waterways gently intersect with the sand dunes. Our captain will pull the boat up on the sand to allow you to explore this topographical wonder. Atop the sand dunes, you can see the mountainous islands emerging from the Pacific Ocean, bright green mangroves stretching towards the sea, and shifting sand dunes as far as the eye can see- all in one place. You will never feel more connected to nature than standing in this place taking in the sounds, views, breeze, and Baja sun.
In our opinion, there is just no better place in the world to admire the sunset than Mag Bay. We can hike, bike, drive, or even kayak to the other side of the island to watch the sky turn every shade of purple, pink, and orange. The light reflects on the rocky coastline with Cabo San Lazaro in the distance. A wide-open, beautiful stretch of the peninsula without a soul around!
Do you know where your seafood came from, how it was caught, and who caught it? Ride across the bay in the early morning and watch as the local fisherman utilize centuries of knowledge about these waters and where Magdalena Bay is one of the last places that you can see fishermen practicing the art of true artisanal fishing. Ride across the bay and
